The four-year wait is over, the Olympic Games are back. Every true sports fan loves the five-ringed circus, but it's more than just the national pride, it's also a fantastic festival of betting opportunities. Bookies are gradually getting smarter - the research some have done in pricing up hundreds of markets is admirable, but there will be errors of judgement and over-optimism on a patriotic front as well.

You won't win betting on the Olympics with just one account. Spread as far and wide as you can, and around the world. Aus-centric books like TABSportsbet will be big unders on the Australians and overs on many of the rest. The UK books will go overboard slashing the price on any Brit with a hope, but they will also bet each-way on a lot of events plus have promo offers. The European and Caribbean books will have different angles again, with some like Pinnacle offering mostly head-to-head markets. And there's Betfair. Being punter-to-punter, the more obscure markets will have little liquidity and the bigger ones will probably only form in the last few hours before the event. But that can have its upside and downside - get in early and ask for silly prices.

I plan on covering athletics and swimming with comments/tips for each final (or at semi-final stage when semis and final are only 2-3hrs apart), with selected tips from other events including hockey. Medal tallies and the like mean doing the form for wrestling, sailing and dressage, and to be perfectly honest, I've got better things to do!

For every sport, an athlete can be dominant all year round but when it comes to the biggest stage of them all, be the biggest choker you've ever seen. Sergey Bubka and Hicham El Guerrouj were extremely short-priced several times and only came home with gold from one Games. The conditions will be nasty - hot, humid and choking in smog and a lot of events will be scheduled for American primetime TV, not for the comfort of the athlete. Swimming finals will all be in the morning which will be foreign to them, but at least it will give us more time for markets to be priced up.

Timings for tips will be tricky, but I will aim for 9pm AEST during the swimming and 9am during the athletics.
Let the Games begin!
