POSTED Friday the 23rd of August
NRL St George v NZ Warriors
Sun 15:00 EST

New Zealand Warriors are on a roll at the moment, and are a different side with Wade McKinnon back. They look over the odds against the Dragons with the start. They have lost their last six at WIN Stadium, but the Dragons are struggling. They beat the Broncos last week, but dont forget Brisbane were missing Hunt and Hodges.

AFL Port Adelaide v Melbourne
Sun 15:10 EST
Melbourne got a real confidence boost when they smashed the Eagles last week, and I can't see any reason why they won't beat Port today. The Demons midfield has been getting plenty of the ball, it is their forwad line where things have ground to a halt. Port have similar problems in scoring, Melbourne to win a low scoring affair.

AFL Sydney v Fremantle

It must be silly season as we are tipping the Dockers to win a game interstate. They have shown a lot of improvement recently (now that they can't make the finals!), and have a poor record at the SCG, but the Swans are really struggling at the moment. They have named Goodes who must be under-done, and a couple of others are carrying injuries as well. The Dockers can definitely win here, bet to win the game and save your stake on the handicap.

AFL Adelaide v Richmond
Sun 19:10 EST
Expect some bad weather for Adelaide Sunday afternoon, and that should ensure a low scoring match between the Crows and the Tigers. Richmond welcome back Brown, while the Crows forward-line is decimated again with Porplyzia gone for the season. Losing Knights is another big minus for a side that is also struggling for wins at the moment. The Tigers can win, but play it safe and take the 8 points start.

Penrith with the start (and a saver for the win)-Manly were woeful last week, and there is mail around that Orford may be a late withdrawal. He did look proppy last week, and they may have an eye on next week's clash with the Storm. Penrith appear overpriced in this match, the 8 points start is too much.

AFL Kangaroos vs Brisbane Lions
Sun 19:10 EST
Brisbane Lions to beat the Kangaroos- The Roos couldn't score at their last Carrara appearance when they went down to the Saints. Since then they have lost Nathan Thompson, and with the conditions again likely to be cold and 'dewy', it is hard to see how the Roos can kick a competitive score against the rampant combo of Brown and Bradshaw from the Lions.

Fremantle at the + against Port... Freo have lost their last nine matches interstate, and went down by 25 pts to Port (at Subiaco!) in June, but their comeback win last week showed that they are desperate to win all games. Sides historically crash and burn after the Showdowns, and the Port/Adel match was also played in heavy conditions, they are a good risk this week.

NRL Newcastle Knights v South Sydney
Sun 14:00 EST
Newcastle at the minus against Souths....Souths run came to an end with a poor performance against the Tigers, and the Knights have their best possible side on the field following on from a valiant loss to the Sharks. The Bunnies have won only two of their last twelve trips up the freeway, can't see them improving on that record here.

AFL Port Adelaide v Adelaide

The 'Showdowns' are always tight encounters, and this one is likely to be played in ordinary conditions. Both sides have struggled in the wet before, but Port have named just about their best side, while the Crows struggled last week after losing Porplyzia and Burton. Can't see how they are going to kick a competitive score, this is a chance for Port to save some face with the fans.

League Cronulla vs Manly
Sat 19:30 EST
The Sharks will be without Greg Bird but will go into the game with an imposing 'home' record over Manly. The Sea Eagles have only won once at Cronulla in the last 22 years, and although got home by 20 points against the Titans last week, they struggled for the first 60 minutes. Expect this to be a low scoring, dour battle, the value lies with Cronulla

No, we haen't gone loopy, Port will beat the Roos tonight. They have both the Cornes' back, and Shaun Burgoyne, so are nearly at full strength. The Roos have got the wobbles the last few weeks, and the last time these two met, Port won by nearly 100 points.

Rugby TriNations: NZ v S Africa
Sat 17:30 EST
The Tri Nations kicks off this weekend with a blockbuster between the All Blacks and Springboks in Wellington. Ali Williams has been passed fit which is a big plus however with the absence of Richie McCaw and Brendon Leonard most of the responsibility of steering the team around the park will fall on Daniel Carter. Captain Rodney So’oialo has some big shoes to fill in his number 7 jumper and the loose three are an inexperienced combination taking on arguably the best pack in world rugby. For mine this is the best opportunity for the Springboks to record a win on New Zealand soil for a long time. They are good enough to take it.

NRL St George Illawarra v Newcastle
Sat 19:30 EST
Its always hard to tip in the weekend after State of Origin however this week St George/Illawarra have an opportunity to close in on a top 4 spot with a victory over the Knights, who will be without Origin stars Danny Buderus and Ben Cross. The Dragons pack is firing and giving the likes of Jason Nightingale and the Morris brother plenty of opportunities to score tries. If Kurt Gidley is feeling the affects of a tough Origin 3 then tries will be the order of the day for the Dragons.

NRL Manly v Newcastle

Manly have been in good form in recent weeks however without doubt the surprise of the season has been the competitive and consistent form of the Knights. Good wins on the road against the Dogs and Cowboys followed by an unlucky loss at home to the in form Roosters has the young Knights riding high on confidence. With 2nd rowers Houston and Paterson in good form I believe they can push the Sea Eagles all they way at Bluetongue.

AFL Brisbane Lions v Melbourne

Daniel Bradshaw returns for the Lions this week to again form one of the most potent forward lines in the competition with Jonathon Brown. With only one loss since round 8, a dominant on ball brigade and five wins in their last six encounters against the Dees its hard to see them not covering the handicap. Add the fact that Jeff White has been dropped and its hard to see how the home team will get first use of the ball.

It may look like we’ve lost the plot as tipping against Geelong is always dangerous however without Scarlett and with Cornes and Burgoyne back for Port this Grand Final replay may be closer than a lot of people think. The Cowboys have been in poor form and it really is ‘backs to the wall’ time. Thurston will back up from Origin and the likes of Cashmere and Webb have an opportunity to stamp their presence on a game in front of their home crowd. The Knights on the road are a little wobbly at the best of times and with 3 players backing up from Origin and making the trip North its hard to see why they are actually favourites.

NRL Canberra v Parramatta

We’ve mentioned in the past that it is always difficult to tip in the week leading into Origin and this week is no different. One game which has been affected little by an exodus of players is the Parramatta v Canberra game. Joel Monaghan has been released from the NSW squad and Jaryd Hayne would have been unavailable in any case. Its always hard to tip the Raiders on the road however the Eels have been less than impressive and with Monaghan in they will be competitive and certainly have the strike power to give the Eels some headaches.

A week ago the Firebirds were touted a strong Premiership hopes however a loss at home to a desperate Thunderbirds team has them quickly discounted. Big mistake. Romelda Aiken was well held last week and I suspect she will bounce back this week with a big game. Waikato Magic’s form has been against weaker opposition and despite being at home this top of the table clash is sure to be tight. The Aiken v Van Dyke shoot out is sure to be a highlight.

NRL Cronulla Sharks v Gold Coast Titans
Sun 15:00 EST
The Sharks were a little disappointing last week against a much improved Bulldogs team, yet with 8 minutes to go were still a realistic chance of winning. One thing you know is that at Toyota Park they will look a winning chance for much of the match. The Titans on the other hand will look to be in a losing position for most of the match. Lets face it, the Titans on road record have not been too impressive over the last season and a half, and the Sharks with Ross, Gallen and Bird, all keen to atone for last weeks loss, will prove a big stumbling block.

AFL St Kilda v Melbourne

The Saints have their back to the wall in what has been a wasteful season to date. Losses to Brisbane and Collingwood in recent weeks mean the club is desperate for a win to get their campaign back on track. Melbourne without Neitz and with Robertson in doubt look as though they will struggle to kick a score, let alone a winning one. The Saints at Telstra Dome play their best footy and I suspect this will be a confidence building win.

We are at the business end of the season in Super 14s and traditionally the home ground advantage proves a difficult obstacle to overcome. The Crusaders have looked a little disappointing in recent weeks however Daniel Carter has had a week to reacclimatize and no doubt Richie McCaw will stand up in such a big game. Take into account that the Hurricanes have lost Captain Rodney So'oialo and you get a feeling that the game could well be dictated by Tuiali'I and McCaw.

Its Origin week in the NRL and many teams are decimated with unavailable players but no team more so than Melbourne Storm. In all nine players are unavailable for Storm and that includes their fullback, five eighth, hooker and lock. The Dragons will sadly miss Mark Gasnier however Cooper and Hornby will be ably replaced by Josh Morris and Rangi Chase and will feel the Origin departures less severely than their opponents. Sydney host the Bombers at ANZ Stadium without Barry Hall. Home games at ANZ are traditionally low scoring so without Hall and Fletcher back for the Dons that tradition is likely to continue. League players also have trouble holding their footing which should make scoring even more difficult and the Swans seldom bury teams. It all adds up to a tighter game than the form line suggests.

The last few weeks of Super 14s competition is always tough to call as motivation varies from club to club. One game where motivation will be high is the Lions and Chiefs game. The Lions will be desperate for a win to help move them off the bottom of the table while the Chiefs must win to keep Semi Final aspirations alive and well. Weigh it all up and on face value the Lions look value at the start as the Chiefs attempt to re-group without Leonard and Kahui.

The Cheetahs and Highlanders game tonight is a battle of the cellar dwellers, however the winner will be enough points clear of the bottom of the table to feel save of the wooden spoon. Enough incentive for any team. The Highlanders were courageous last week against a somewhat depleted Stormers while the Cheetahs had enough ball to have won the game against the Hurricanes. There is too much at stake for the Cheetahs in front of their home crowd to keep making the same mistakes as last week, and Meyer Brosman in the centres should give them more options in attack to create a winning score.

The Cheetahs pushed the Brumbies and Waratahs to the limit then gave the Reds a lesson at home before an inept first half against the Stormers in Cape Town. The week off will certainly be well received while the Hurricanes butter up for the third leg of their South African tour. They gave the Bulls a touch up a fortnight ago, but that form may be inflated as the defending champions simply didn't turn up, before a physical game against the Stormers put their finals hopes in jeopardy. I suspect the Cheetahs will be cherry ripe while the Hurricanes will be feeling the affects of an arduous season.

AFL

Port Adelaide v West Coast - Perth 2:40pm Sunday local time

Port are loaded with pace in the midfield, and although beaten by Brisbane they were nearly 50 points in front during the third quarter. The Eagles have got issues scoring goals and with Quentin Lynch likely to be missing, those problems are likely to haunt them again. There is also a whisper that Michael Braun will be a late withdrawal, so that makes them light on in the midfield and will make it even more difficult to score.

Cheetahs v Stormers - Cape Town 11:00pm Saturday

Firstly we are going to keep away from AFL this week. That crystal ball is certainly very foggy at the moment. On the rugby front however there appears to be a couple of games which represent a bit of value. The Sormers and Cheetahs to date always produce intensely competitive games and this match up in Cape Town should be no different. The Stormers have been in great form, however the Cheetahs will have some confidence up with a win over the Reds last week. The size of the Cheetahs pack can always be a little intimidating and they will be out to prove a point in front of a partisan Stormer crowd. With two wins from two starts in this competition against the Stormers they represent real value.

Super14

Bulls v Hurricanes - Pretoria 1:00am Sunday

Battles between the Bulls and Hurricanes have been traditional hard nosed affairs. Both packs are big and there is always plenty of aggressive running from the outside backs. I've liked what I've seen from the Bulls in their last two encounters on their Australasian tour and back home in Pretoria they will be out to show the home fans that they still have plenty to offer. Bryan Habana has found form and they still posses a pack to 'die for'. I suspect that's what they will be prepared to do this week back in Pretoria.

Bulls conceding the start : 2 Units (-3.5 @ 1.91 Sportsbet, -3.5 @ Pinnacle Sports, Sports Acumen, IASBet and many others) - Loss

AFL

Carlton v Essendon - Melbourne 7:10pm Saturday

Carlton are in search of the record for the longest losing run in the VFL/AFL since 1901. Tonight they take on the Bombers who will be without Scott Lucas and a loss to Carlton will equal that record. Luckily for them they have a good record against the Bombers and have a habit of getting up for these type of games. Who can forget their qualifying final win against the Bomber Invincible's of 1999 ? Records are made to be broken however I feel tonight is not the night.

Carlton to win : 1 Unit ($2.24 @ Pinnacle Sports, $2.20 @ Sports Acumen) - Loss

NRL

Wests Tigers v Penrith - Sydney 7:00pm Monday

The battle of the Western Suburbs takes place on Monday evening when the Tigers host the Panthers at Campbelltown. These matches are always played with plenty of fire and are traditionally tight so I expect this game to be no different. Take into account that Farah is unlikely makes the match-up even tighter. It will be hard for the Tigers without their two play makers so I suspect the Panthers to come away with a win.

Panthers at the start : 2 Units (+6.0 @ 1.93 Pinnacle Sports, +6.0 @ 1.91 Lasseters, Sports Acumen, Sportsbet and many others) - Win

Super 14

Blues v Bulls - Auckland 5:35pm Saturday

The Blues got back on track with a win over the Stormers last week and the Bulls have their back against the wall...a loss here will spell the end of their season. The Blues lost to the Sharks in Durban, then were beaten by the Force in Auckland before a lucky penalty win against the Stormers last week. Not exactly earth trembling form. The Bulls welcome back Kirchner, Spies and Habbana, and with the influx of quality players and a must win situation, they will prove tough to beat.

Bulls at the start : 2 Units (+14.0 @ IASBet, Sportingbet, +13.5 @ Pinnacle Sports, Sports Acumen, Sportsbet and many others) - Win

AFL

Richmond v Kangaroos - Melbourne 4:40pm Sunday

The Tigers looked improved last week against Carlton while the Roos were poor against the Bombers. The win should be a boost for the Tigers confidence and although the Roos are renowned for their fighting spirit it may take a little more to get a win. This will be a tight contest, no doubt, however the odds against the Tigers looks real value.

Richmond to win : 1 Unit ($2.27 @ Pinnacle Sports, $2.25 @ Sportsbet, $2.20 freely available) - Loss

Lions v Reds - South Africa 2:00pm Sunday

The Reds travel to Ellis Park tonight to take on a disappointing Lions franchise after an emphatic win over the Bulls at Suncorp. That form suggest the Reds will be tough to beat and perhaps so however the Lions form is better than it looks on paper. They have a win over the Cheetahs, were unlucky against the Force and were competitive against the Sharks, the latter two teams looking like semi finalists. It's a different proposition when Australian sides travel to South Africa and the Lions will be desperate for another win before they travel for the Southern leg of their matches.

Lions to win : 1 Unit (1.85 @ Pinnacle Sports, 1.83 @ Sports Acumen, 1.80 @ Sportsbet) - Draw

NRL

Storm v Sharks - Melbourne 3:05pm Sunday

The Storm and Sharks were both very impressive last week so this is likely to be a top game. The Sharks have a 3 and 3 record against the Storm in Melbourne and traditionally they are tight and competitive affairs. The Sharks pack is big and classy with Gallen and Bird in great form and they are likely to help set the platform for their unheralded backline to make some inroads into the Storm defense. Its impossible to pick against the Storm but this should be a tight one.

Sharks at the start : 2 Units (+9.0 @ 1.97, Pinnacle Sports, +9.0 @ 1.91 Sportsbet and others) - WIN

Wests Tigers v Dragons - Sydney 3:00pm Sunday

Tipping in the first week of the League season is usually fraught with fear however as little else appeals this week we may as well have a go. St George have promised much over the years but often fail to deliver. Wests rely heavily on Benji Marshall, but he is a risky conveyance. The young Dragons look to have plenty of strike power while the Tigers backline has a different look, so for that reason I feel the Dragons will be able to put enough points on to win.

Dragons to win : 2 Units (1.70 @ Lasseters, Sports Acumen, Sportsbet and many others) - LOSS

NRL

Storm v Warriors - Melbourne 7:00pm Monday

Melbourne Storm are deserved Premiership favourites however coming back from a trip to the UK and with the loss of a couple of experienced players it may take a few weeks for them to hit their straps. Don't forget they were lucky to get away with the Tigers in the first round last year and this Warrior outfit should prove a bigger hurdle. Storm should prevail but I expect the Warriors to give them a bit of a scare.

Sharks v Blues - Durban 4:10 am

The Sharks have won their last three encounters against the Blues including a semi-final in Durban last year. The Blues could not have been more impressive to date but this will be their litmus test, and without Isa Nacewa to help launch many of their backline raids I fancy the home team.
