As much as I hate the pointless and baseless story, at least it will get the MPs expenses bullshit off the main headline..

2009/10 European Season Preview

The summer break in Europe has revolved around one team, and every soccer fan is awaiting the performance of Real Madrid with interest. Ronaldo, Kaka and Benzema highlight that the era of the Galactico is back bigger than ever and the man with the task of getting the team to work is the former Villarreal manager Manuel Pellegrini. Their rivalry with Barcelona will be even more intense, and Barca responded with a huge transfer of their own exchanging Samuel Eto’o for Zlatan Ibrahimovic. If, and it is a huge 'if', the Galacticos click they could be unstoppable but Barcelona are rightly considered marginally better as the season opens.

The two Spanish heavyweights dominate the Champions League betting, yet for three seasons England have provided three out of four semi-finalists and two of the English clubs rate as betting material. Manchester United have suffered a monumental loss in Ronaldo, and will not be as good a team without him, yet have years of Champions League experience and are one of only seven teams that can win the tournament (Barca, Real, four English clubs, and Inter Milan). With the huge disappointment of last seasons’ final defeat fresh in Fergusons’ mind, odds of 9.55 on Betfair (post 5% comm.) are too big. Stake 1.5pt.

Chelsea will have supporters with Ancelotti’s Champions League history added to the mix, whilst Arsenal will invariably qualify for the knockout stages with comfort. However I feel that Liverpool will struggle with their domestic title bid, and will as in recent seasons (2006/7 and 2007/ 8) concentrate on Europe. Benitez is one of few managers who will relish challenging the Spanish sides tactically, and the Reds have a great record against Barca and Real Madrid. Take 11.0 with Centrebet or 10.95 @ Betfair (post 5% comm.) and stake 1pt.

The Spanish league looks like being a two-way affair, and our betting interests will be at the other end of the table. The promoted teams are favourites yet Tenerife have enough to stay up, and I feel that Almeria will be drawn into a survival battle following two seasons of over-achievement. Only four points clear last season, the loss of Negredo (42% of goals) leaves a huge gap with little financial clout to use. Coral offer 6.5 on relegation which is worthy of 1pt outlay.

Diego Forlan top-scored last season, and can again profit from the way in which the goals will be shared at Barcelona and Real Madrid. He notched 32 times, and will again be the dominant marksman at Atletico, with Aguerro and excellent foil. Odds of 13.0 appeal (Paddy Power) and each-way terms paying 4.0 for three places are also pleasing. I recommend a stake of 0.75pt e/w on the Uruguayan hotshot.

In Italy Inter are deserved favourites and the loss of Ibrahimovic is covered with Milito and Eto’o forming a destructive looking partnership. Odds of 1.83 are not quite big enough to invest, but Mourinho will be confident of repeating last seasons’ comfortable title. Juventus are second favourites thanks to the arrival of Diego and AC Milan losing Kaka. The Brazilian was at the centre of everything Milan constructed and they will obviously suffer from the loss yet not as much as the odds suggest. Huntelaar and Pato will thrive and Ronaldinho will relish emerging from Kaka’s shadow. Bet 365 offer AC Milan at 2.5 in a season match bet with Juventus which I price at 2.2 so have 4pts on the Milan side.

Finally in Germany the season is two weeks in, and odds-on Bayern Munich have not started well. Louis van Gaal has had a mixed career and is no certainty to guide the best squad to the title. Considering they won the league, kept their stars, and strengthened wisely, Wolfsburg are still being under-rated. Odds of 8.0 (Various) appeal to the tune of 0.75pt, with Corals offering us a carrot worth devouring with a market without Bayern. The Wolves are priced as 4.0 second favourites behind Schalke yet have the quality to be best of the rest and this price is worth 3pts.

Man Utd win Champions League @9.55 Betfair - 1.5pts
Liverpool win Champions League @11.0 Centrebet, 10.95 Betfair - 1pt.
Almeria La Liga Relegation @6.5 Corals - 1pt
Diego Forlan La Liga Top-scorer 13.0 Paddy Power - 0.75pt each way
AC Milan to beat Juventus (season) 2.5 Bet365 - 4pts
Wolfsburg win Bundesliga 8.0 (SportsAlive, Will Hill) - 0.75pt. (0.5pt if 7.5)
Wolfsburg in betting without Bayern Munich - 4.0 Corals 3pts.

2009/10 Week 2

The new English season has barely started, but the bookies have given us a couple of interesting prices to get stuck into this weekend.
First up, Newly promoted Birmingham finished last season in second place in The Championship, but with a trend of incredibly low scoring games. Over 46 games, they scored just 54 goals (only 2 more than bottom placed Charlton) and conceded a divisional low of 37 - this averaged out at less than 2 goals per game for their fans to enjoy. This week they take on Stoke City in a game likely to be low on goalscoring oppurtunities, for this reason take 2 points at the 1.72 TAB are offering on under 2.5 goals in the game.

In the Championship, West Bromich Albion entertain Ipswich in what can be considered the best team in the division hosting the most hyped in Roy Keane's Ipswich. WBA have started the season well, with a draw against Newcastle in a game they deserved to win, and two impressive wins away from home against Notts forest and Peterborough. Ipswich meanwhile, are yet to register a win, culminating in a poor performance losing 3-1 last week at home to Crystal Palace. Roy Keane seems to have work to do, so alleviate Pinnacle of some money by staking 2 points at the 1.82 they offer.

Finally in England's League 1, William Hill seem to underestimate the scoring talent of Leed's Jermaine Beckford. An astonishing 26 goals in 32 games last season has been followed up by three in three games so far this year for a player destined to star at a higher level. As big favourites at home to Tranmere, take Bekford 0.5 points each way at the 5.0 which will return a profit providing he scores any of the first five goals in the game.

Looking to the longer term, the Spanish season gets underway next week and we are looking to take on big spending Real who may have to wait for their galacticos to shine. Madrid's sponsors BWin are a standout 2.0 about Barcelona who are still the team to beat having added shrewdly to their squad whilst only losing a want-away Eto'o. Take 4 points at the price which should be nearer the 1.75 mark.

Two further bets for the season involve a bit of favourite backing in the Scottish Premier and Serie A this term, staking 2 points on each.

Celtic, having comfortably beaten Aberdeen away already this season, are still 1.83 with Coral to win what is effectively a two horse race with Rangers. Likely to depart the Champions League thanks to Arsenal, they should be able to fully concentrate on capturing their crown back from Rangers after undeservingly being pipped last season.

Inter Milan are also likely to prove their dominance in Italy this season. They coasted to the title last season by a 7 point margin and there is no reason to suggest they have got weaker swapping Eto'o and an underated Diego Milito for Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Take Sports Alive up on their standout offer of 1.85 or the money available at 1.89 on Betfair.

Bets:

Birmingham v Stoke under 2.5 goals @1.72 TAB - 2 pts
WBA over Ipswich @1.82 Pinnacle - 2 pts
Jermaine Beckford(Leeds) to score first in Leeds v Tranmere @5.0 - 0.5 pts each way 1/3 the odds first 5

Barcelona to win La Liga @2.0 BWIN - 4 pts
Celtic to win the SPL @1.83 Coral - 2 pts
Inter to win Serie A @1.85 SportsAlive , 1.82 Betfair - 2 pts

2009/10 Week 3

The Primera Liga kicks off this weekend and it's business as usual for the top two - Barcelona and Real Madrid, who are chalked up as prohibitive favourites at 1.18 and 1.25. Whilst both should record victories at home to Gijon and Deportivo respectively, the prices are short enough with Messi likely not to be involved in the opener, and Madrid playing their first competitive match with a largely changed first XI.

We will therefore look elsewhere for a value bet, which may be found in the Athletic Bilbao v Espanyol fixture on Sunday. Centrebet have a 'draw no-bet' market whereby you can back Espanyol at 2.31, with your money back should the match be drawn. Espanyol were languishing 3rd bottom midway through last season before Mauricio Pochettino was installed as their third manager of the year. However, the club's ex-player worked a revival that culminated in a commendable 10th placed finish including 8 wins in their last 10 fixtures. With a couple of re-inforcements, including Nakamura from Celtic, they should go well again this season. Bilbao may struggle, and lost 6 of their last 10 finishing just 2 points from safety and therefore should not be solid favourites against the improving Espanyol side. Take the 2.31 for 1.5 points.

Elsewhere in Spain, Atletico Madrid look good at 2.2 (Coral,Totesport,BetFred) to win at Malaga who are reeling from losing several key players including Nacho and Eliseu as well as a change in manager in the close season. They may take time to gel, but the same cannot be said of a stable Atletico outfit who have warmed up nicely by beating Panathanaikos home and away which should have them tuned up nicely for the season opener. Take 1.5 points at the 2.2.

Finally in La Liga, back Getafe to come away with a win at Racing Santander. Whilst neither team excelled last season - gaining 42 and 46 points respectively, Santander have lost their manager to the afore-mentioned Malaga together with the core of its quality last season. Zigic, Garay, Sepsi, Pereira, Luccin and Valera were at the heart of most good things to happen to the club and they are tipped to struggle badly this season. Getafe are a more robust outfit and can take advantage of the poor state of the Northern Spaniard's squad at a tasty 3.75 (Stan James, Expekt) or 3.65 at TAB. Bet 0.75 of a point.

In England this week, take a chance on there being a lack of firepower in the Blackburn v West Ham EPL fixture, both teams are missing key personnel with McCarthy and Di Santo carrying knocks and new signing Kalinic yet to look up to speed. West Ham meanwhile play with Carlton Cole at the spearhead of the attack but missing midfielders willing to gamble on getting into attacking positions. Collison, Dyer, Noble and Parker (the likely starting midfield) combined for just 7 goals in a collective 84 appearances last season. Blackburn, would have hoped for more goals from the likes of El Hadj Diouf and Morten Gamst Pedersen than the 2 in 45 they acheived from advanced positions last term. Take 2 points at the 1.72 TAB offer on under 2.5 goals and hope the teams don't belatedly find their shooting boots.

Bets:

Espanyol over Bilbao 'Draw No Bet' 1.5 pts @2.31 (Centrebet)
Atletico Madrid over Malaga 1.5 pts @2.2 (Coral, Totesport, BetFred)
Getafe over Racing Santander 0.75 pts @3.75 (Stan James, Expekt) or 3.65 (TAB)
Blackburn v West Ham under 2.5 goals 2 pts @1.73 (TAB)

most tipsters' range is 1-5pts. As a general rule, you should have a punting bank of 50x your standard bet, at least...
